Comprehension

Comprehension refers to a deep understanding of the meaning of the printed text.  Comprehension is the ultimate goal of reading.  Reading the text with fluency and having a good understanding of the vocabulary will leverage the reader’s comprehension of the text. Strong reading comprehension involves the reader’s ability to analyze and make inferences while reading. It involves the reader’s ability to question the text and generate more questions after reading the text. Further, comprehension involves the reader’s ability to monitor his/her understanding while reading and knowing how to deal with comprehension challenges as they arise.

Comprehension is achieved when the reader is able to effectively interact with the text and reflect on the reading. It is essential not only to academic learning (across all subjects), but also to life-long learning.
