One of the ways I support families is through my targeted literacy lessons for children ages 5 to 16. Following the administration of a benchmark assessment and thorough analysis of the assessment data, I create an instructional plan that complements the child’s specific learning needs.
We Need to Catch Them Early
According to Reading Partners, a children’s literacy nonprofit,
“Studies have shown that children who cannot read at grade level by the start of the fourth grade are four times less likely to graduate on time than their grade-level peers.” As such, struggling readers who do not receive the necessary targeted support early on, in grades K – 2, will continue to struggle in fourth grade and beyond. My structured literacy support can change children’s trajectory for literacy learning and acquisition. Early intervention makes all the difference!
Structured Literacy Approach
I use a student-centered, structured literacy teaching approach that involves systematic, explicit instruction grounded in the science of reading. Every lesson follows a specific structure and students are taught reading and writing skills in an explicit manner. This approach not only helps students who are experiencing reading difficulties, but there is substantial evidence that it is more effective for all learners. Each lesson involves engaging, multi-sensory activities and varied guided practice opportunities. The lessons I plan are always fun and interactive!
Each session is one hour in duration, two or three times per week depending on the learner’s needs. Sessions may be one-on-one or in small groups (4 to 6 students).
